Hitchhiker's Guide
There's a balance of comedy and sci-fi in Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide series that is hard to recreate. The series consistently achieves a virtuous cycle of some ridiculously far out concept that wraps absurdity into comedy before wrapping back around to something poignant or emotionally resonant. This was the first series I read that felt like it was written specifically for me.
